Western Pennsylvania Numismatic Society

Pittsburgh Exposition Medals

The Western Pennsylvania Numismatic Society was founded on June 14, 1878 in Pittsburgh, PA. To publicize the club and promote the hobby an exhibit was mounted at the Great Pittsburgh Exposition of 1878 and 1879; souvenir medals were issued for the event. I was given information by a current
member of the club that silver, copper and brass examples were struck to order by members
of the club. In 1878 seven silver, 25 copper and 15 brass were struck. In 1879 17 silver,
25 copper and 25 brass were struck. As many as 200 white metal examples were
struck each year.
