The Claflin Prize was established in 1871 by John Claflin, a prominent
New York merchant and alumnus of the college. Two gold medals were
awarded annually - one to a Senior with the best exam in Greek and one
to a Junior with the best exam in Latin. Silver medals were awarded to
the Freshmen with the greatest profiency in Greek and Latin.

The Cromwell Medal was established in 1850 by Mr. Charles Cromwell, a
New York City merchant. It was awarded annually for excellence in
history and belles lettres. A Silver medal was added in 1856 for second
best.
